I am back in South Africa for a Christmas visit, dear Comrades. European winters are depressing as hell and no amount of Christmas Market fun can change that. Anyway, ever since we landed, I get constant reminders of the political and socio-economic turmoil that our country faces every day. Quite sad I must say.
Yes, there are many historical factors that led us to where we are now. But honestly, we can’t dwell on the past forever, and we should shame where shaming is due. The problem is not just a specific political party, but politicians in general.
There are three “professions” which I hate the most and should not exist. In no particular order they are: Real estate agents, politicians and recruiters. Today I will tell you why politicians are on the list, and why they are worse than dog shit.
The recent US elections made me lose my shit
I must say, US politics is just obscene. I know they are really proud of their system, and they are leaders of the free world, and they are the world’s north star and blah blah blah trash. The amount of hatred and bias by both parties just really pissed me off during the elections. It has probably always been like that, I wouldn’t know, but with our constant access to information it has just become more apparent.
Watching both sides of the media (CNN and Fox) report on things like the polls or the presidential debate, made me both laugh and mad as hell. The amount of manipulation and bullshitting by the politicians and the mainstream media was truly legendary. One side said Harris clearly won the debate, while the other said Trump clearly won. Two polls would say it was going to be a Democrat landslide, while other said the Republicans will win all the swing states etc. Luckily, mainstream media is on the decline, but their reach is still too great.
Both candidates and parties threw the one slur after the next at each other. Trump was apparently a Nazi, and would ensure that America lived under fascist rule for the next four years. Biden was apparently the worst leader of all time and destroyed America like no one else in the past. A Harris victory would just have been a continuation of this. They would do and say whatever they though would bring them victory, even if what they said is rubbish and seriously damaging. For them it is just a means to an end. I just picture the Democrats sitting in their HQ saying: “We are behind in the polls, let’s throw a hail-Mary and call him and his party Nazis”. Imagine if you didn’t like someone at work and you just casually called him / her a Nazi in a meeting? In the normal world something like that would get you cancelled and then fired. Disgraceful.
I didn’t care who won in the end, but I know for sure what the next four years will bring. Daily racism and fascism allegations. Daily claims of human rights violations. Made up or grossly over-exaggerated claims of sexism, sexual abuse or toxic masculinity. I am looking forward to the next court case Trump might be involved in. I hope it is a good one, like Trump is secretly the mastermind behind the entire Zama-Zama operation in Mpumalanga, and the illegally mined gold is stashed underneath Jacob Zuma’s fire pool.
The GNU and local politics
I followed the last election quite closely, only because it seemed like the ANC might not get a majority. I was quite pleased that the ANC lost so much support, because they deserve to be removed from power. Unfortunately, they still had the most support, and had to work with the smaller parties to form the Government of National Unity (GNU). Whilst forming the GNU, it was very apparent that politicians are just the lowest forms of trash. Maybe I am just a naïve guy, but I actually though things might change in South Africa.
It is really funny how most of the parties declared “we will never work with the ANC!”. Yet when coalition talks started, most of the parties that got a decent number of votes, declared that they will “have conversations with the ANC”. Most of these parties differ a lot from the ANC ideologically, but when they got a sniff of power, they jumped. They will probably all claim that it “was for the greater good of the people” that they joined the GNU. I bet oom Frikkie and tannie Gerda from Kroonstad are quite upset that their party decided to sell out and work with the communists.
I find it quite interesting that the DA didn’t fight harder for better cabinet positions or more positions that actually have an impact. I just got the feeling that they were so thrilled to get a bit of power, that they didn’t care what they got. They also get bullied around by the ANC and the mainstream media, but they don’t step on too many toes because they might lose power. It just shows you how rubbish politicians are, irrespective of which party they belong to.
The serious mud-slinging and chaos seems to happen on local-government level. Reading about everything just makes me laugh, but also makes me sad. It is absolutely ridiculous how parties and politicians just serve their own interest and not those of the people. Our county is in dire need of basic service delivery, but that always gets put on the back burner. Housing? Water? Electricity? Affordable transport? Nah, who needs that when you can steal those funds and let the people fend for themselves. Nothing in our country will change before the politicians stop serving their own interests.
My two cents
I mentioned earlier that real-estate agents and recruiters also don’t deserve to exist. Recruiter will luckily be replaced by AI soon, and real-estate agents will also be replaced by other technologies and processes. Politicians will unfortunately be around for a while still. It feels that people enjoy the theatre of it. They like Malema singing “kill the boer” because some white dude didn’t give a black guy a boerie roll. They like it when Trump lambasts the Democrats for “flooding the country with illegal aliens that steal our jobs!”. They like it when Trump says something transphobic and will “change America into a fascist state”. For the love of God, don’t give these people an audience or attention, because they thrive on the attention and exposure.
Politicians that actually give a shit are few and far between. They want power, money and influence. Their personal agendas come first and all their election promises go out the window. Seriously, do the people really think they will all get free water and electricity? Did people really think Trump would have built a wall to keep the Mexicans out? Come on people, asseblief.
Sometimes I feel we would be better off under a dictatorship or a monarchy. Well, at least now we have freedom, right?
